Gerald Scarfe has been political cartoonist at The Sunday Times since 1967, and his drawings have appeared in the The New Yorker magazine for more than 20 years. Throughout his career he savaged politicians and public figures with satire that transformed them into monsters, babies and ghouls. He drew Margaret Thatcher from her time in Edward Heath's Shadow Cabinet, through her eleven year term as Prime Minister and up until her death in 2013. Although the drawings are of Thatcher, they are as much about Scarfe. They show a political narrative viewed through the form and personality of a single politician, but the aim is to show the transformative aspect of Scarfe's drawing as he progressed. Thatcher was his great muse, it was a hate fuelled passion which fired his imaginitive scope. He was always on her back, relentless in his pursuit of her. This book brings together his drawings of her for the first time.
